The New York Red Bulls have been a staple of Major League Soccer since 1996. As one of the original ten charter clubs, they are part of the founding organizations that have pushed MLS to grow and become what it is today. The club has managed to find success over its 24 years of existence, including the Supporters Shield in 2013 and numerous appearances in the playoffs. Known for their passionate following, the New York Red Bulls are one of the most well-known organizations in Major League Soccer and are sure to remain that way for years to come.

The team was initially known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars

The team, now known as the New York Red Bulls was originally founded in 1996 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. During their inaugural season, the MetroStars played at Giants Stadium and made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinal stage of the playoffs. After several season changes and rebranding attempts, the team finally became known as the New York Red Bulls in 2006.

The name Red Bulls comes from a collaboration between Austrian energy drink company Red Bull and Empire Soccer Group, which purchased the rights to operate in MLS. Since then, the New York Red Bulls have become a dominant force in US soccer, having won their first Supporters Shield trophy in 2013 and reaching multiple MLS Cup Playoff appearances.

In 2006, the team was sold to Red Bull GmbH and renamed the New York Red Bulls

In 2006, the MLS’s New York/New Jersey MetroStars saw a change in ownership after Austrian-based energy drink company Red Bull purchased the club. The team was rebranded as the New York Red Bulls and brought an exciting new era for soccer fans in the region. They finished as runner-up in their first season under the Red Bulls name and have since had moments of brilliance but also inconsistent results on the field. Regardless, their brand has become iconic amongst MLS teams and offers a unique story to follow over the years.

The Red Bulls have won the Supporters’ Shield (given to MLS’s regular season champions) three times (2013, 2015, 2018)

The Red Bulls have earned three Supporters’ Shield titles in a relatively short period of time and dominated Major League Soccer’s regular season for the past decade.

The Shield is given to Major League Soccer’s regular season champions and is one of the most cherished trophies in the league. Since its first win in 2013, followed by back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2018, New York has demonstrated countless times that success comes to those that stay driven no matter the outcome on the field. The Red Bulls put together an impressive record during their remarkable run of Supporters’ Shield titles and have inspired other MLS clubs on how to achieve greatness.

They have also reached the MLS Cup final once, in 2008, but lost to the Columbus Crew

DC United, part of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer (MLS), has made four appearances in the MLS Cup finals. While they succeeded in three of those cups – winning back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997 – their run to the 2008 final resulted in a loss to the Columbus Crew. Since then, DC United have regrouped and bolstered its roster with quality players and has made it back to the playoffs several times, demonstrating their desire to return to cup success once again.

Some of the team’s most notable players include Thierry Henry, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and Tim Cahill

The New York Red Bulls have had some of the most popular players in Major League Soccer history. With Thierry Henry, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and Tim Cahill leading the way, the organization built a foundation for thrilling play on the pitch. Thierry Henry set a precedent of success during his time with the club, and Bradley Wright-Phillips continued that winning spirit by becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer. Adding to their wins was Tim Cahill, whose acrobatic goal celebrations highlighted his remarkable ability as a midfielder. Together, these three players molded one of MLS’s most successful teams.

The season started off with a bang as they scored an incredible goal just seven seconds into their first game against Philadelphia Union – setting a new Major League Soccer record! The Red Bull players were ecstatic, and this set them up perfectly for the rest of the season.

They went from strength to strength, winning 22 games throughout the regular season – more than any other team before them – and racked up 71 points in total, also a new record.
